  • What is cast iron?
A casting is an iron part formed by pouring molten iron into a sand mold. The mold is comprised of two halves that, when mated together, form a cavity into which the molten iron is poured. The mold forms the external surface of the casting. If an internal cavity is required in the casting, a core is placed inside the mold cavity. After the iron solidifies, the mold is broken, the cores removed and the part is readied for finishing operations. The sand is then remolded and used again.

What does cast iron look like?
Cast iron is silver/gray in color and can easily be rusted or painted to match your décor - Instructions for finishing cast iron. In fact, if left out, cast iron will rust on its own just from the moisture in the air.

    How strong is cast iron?
The "American Heritage Dictionary" defines "cast-iron" as an adjective: 1. Made of cast iron. 2. Rigid; inflexible: a cast-iron rule. 3. Exceptionally strong or resistant: a cast-iron stomach.

We have many customers using our cast iron brackets for counter overhangs and fireplace mantle supports. But please note, that although cast iron is extremely strong it is also brittle, if dropped it will usually break.
