Helpful Information on Bar Stools and Counter Stools

Stools are available in many different styles, materials, sizes, heights, finishes, fabrics, and prices. This makes for a lot of choices!

For your convenience we have compiled some basic industry information and hints that should help to answer any questions you may have, and aid you in finding the seating solution that will be most appropriate for your needs. This guide should help you determine which size and style stools will be most appropriate for your needs.

What height stool do you need?
The general rule of thumb is to have 10"-13" between your seat height and your table height..

Standard Seat Heights:
Vanity Stools= 17-19”
Counter Stools = 24-26”
Bar Stools = 28-31”

Standard Table Heights:
Vanity Table = 28-31”
Island/Counter Table = 35-36”
Bar Table = 40-42”
High Bar Table = 45-48”

How many stools will fit at a table?
Plan your table seating. The main objective is that all guests are comfortable when they are seated. Select comfortable and ample seating and don't seat too many people at the table.

Seating Guideline:
You should have 28-34” of space per person. This allows for 24-28” for each place setting and 4-6” between each place setting.
Allow 24-28” of space behind each chair when someone's seated in it.
Also allow for 12-14” depth beneath the table for leg room.

Do you want arms on your stools?
This is really a matter of personal preference. Armed stools can be more convenient for the elderly, as they can use the arms to aid in raising or lowering themselves in the stool. If you decide on an armed stool, you want to be sure that the arms are low enough to slide beneath the table without bumping into it.

Should you get bar stools or counter stools that swivel?
There is a usually a price differential between swivel and stationary stools, and one would think that the stationary stool would outsell the swivel because of that. But, the swivel feature can be important in allowing people to maneuver and get in and out of the stool with ease.
